The use of donkeys, past and present

In Quebec, as in many other countries, animal-drawn power has become anecdotal and donkeys’ main purpose has therefore disappeared. In developing countries, however, they are still reliable and effective load-bearers and some families even depend on them for their survival. They are able to carry very heavy loads.

Today, donkeys are still used as pets, pack animals and guard donkeys. By nature, donkeys have an aversion to dogs and coyotes, which they are quick to chase away from their living space. Donkey milk is also used for human nourishment, and even more commonly in cosmetics. In some countries, such as Italy, certain regional breeds of donkeys have been able to survive primarily thanks to dairy farming.
